KPhA Advocacy

KPhA represents the pharmacy profession in the legislative arena on the local, state and national level. We alert members to critical changes and pending legislation so members can proactively influence positive change and protect their profession. KPhA is committed to creating and supporting initiatives that help to advance pharmacy practice.

  • KPhA's Political Action Committee is instrumental in advocacy efforts and supports candidates that support pharmacy
  • KPhA works closely with the Kansas State Board of Pharmacy, the KU School of Pharmacy and other stakeholders on issues of importance to you
  • KPhA hosts a "Day with the Legislature" at the Kansas Statehouse each February to acquaint association members with the legislative process, their House and Senate elected leaders and government officials to discuss important pharmacy issues
  • KPhA utilizes weekly conference calls with its members and professional lobbyist to keep them up-to-date on legislation during the session

Advocacy Issues

  • Working on passage of Medication Synchronization legislation
  • Working on the Regulations for Collaborative Practice Agreements and Technician Certification
  • Working on KPhA’s Position on Hemp Oil
  • Allowing any willing pharmacy to dispense no matter the health plan
  • Eliminating the inability of pharmacists to negotiate contracts collectively and “take it or leave it” contracts
  • Forcing transparent PBMs and wholesalers so that independent and community pharmacists can remain viable businesses

Future Issues:

  • Envisioning Pharmacists as Providers
  • Determining Pharmacists Ability to Exchange Bioequivalent Products
  • Creating proper controls for Medical Marijuana and determining pharmacists’ roles in controlling the dispensing of the drug
  • Designing and creating a more professional and clinically proficient technician workforce
  • Greater integration of pharmacists into the patient-centered medical home concept (consistent with recognizing pharmacists as providers)
  • Allowing pharmacists prescriptive authority (consistent with recognizing pharmacists as providers)
