Summary:
Dr. Steven M. Burghart will conduct a 45-minute knowledge-based continuing education webinar on Evidence Based Use of Second Generation Antipsychotics in Children and Adolescents. He will discuss the use of second generation antipsychotics (SGAs), also known as atypical antipsychotics, in children and adolescents based on current evidence, or the lack thereof. Use in the following disorders will be discussed:

  • Behavioral symptoms in Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Psychotic Disorders
  • Bipolar Disorder and Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD)
  • Anxiety disorders (including PTSD)
  • Depressive Disorders
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Burghart will also review common and rare adverse events and their management and the development of care plans for appropriate use in this patient population.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the evidence for use of second generation antipsychotics (SGAs) in common disorders in children and adolescents (knowledge).
  2. Identify common and serious adverse effects associated with the use of SGAs in children and adolescents and differences from adult populations. (knowledge).
  3. Design treatment plans for the use of SGAs in children and adolescents (practice).

Accreditation:
Educational Review Systems is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This program is approved for 1 hour (0.1 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit. Proof of participation will be posted to your NABP CPE profile within 4 to 6 weeks to participants who have successfully completed the post-test.
