Maximizing Communication Opportunities that Empower Patients to Take Control of Their Health

Andrew Bzowyckyj received his PharmD from the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy and subsequently completed the 2-year Pharmaceutical Care Leadership Residency at the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy specializing in ambulatory family medicine practice, academia, health care policy, and general philosophies regarding leading change. He is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Pharmacy in the Division of Pharmacy Practice and Administration.
In this capacity, he has a clinical practice site in The Diabetes Center and Primary Care Clinics at Truman Medical Centers - Hospital Hill (TMC-HH) in Downtown Kansas City where he provides direct patient care approximately 3 days per week, which also serves as an experiential learning setting for student pharmacists (IPPE and APPE) and residents. Since joining the team at TMC-HH, he has been providing Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) to outpatients enrolled in the ADA-accredited program (individual and group education) in addition to conducting individual medication management visits with complex patients with diabetes and numerous other comorbidities.

Do you ever feel like you want to help people be healthier but wonder if you’re making an impact? If either of these situations have ever applied to you, it’s time to work on your “change talk”!
When working with patients, it’s not necessarily WHAT we say, but HOW we say it that decides whether or not a patient will listen and pay attention to us. There has been a lot of research in the area of motivational interviewing, also known as “eliciting change talk”. This session will discuss the different elements of motivational interviewing, how to overcome common communication barriers and traps when attempting motivational interviewing and will offer the opportunity to practice these skills in a small group setting.
This live presentation is the third or four symposiums KPhA is offering this year as part of our grant initiative with the Johnson County Health and Environment. All pharmacists are invited to participate, however we highly encourage pharmacists from Johnson County Kansas to attend.
1. Describe the core principles of motivational interviewing
2. Recognize common “traps” encountered with unmotivated patients
3. Identify situations in your daily practice where motivational interviewing can have a positive impact
4. Analyze a simulated patient encounter for appropriate use of motivational interviewing
5. Apply motivational interviewing techniques to a patient encounter
Educational Review Systems is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This program is approved for 2 hours (0.2 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit. Proof of participation will be posted to your NABP CPE profile within 4 to 6 weeks to participants who have successfully completed the post-test.
