In the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) news, ASHP and ACPE announced the first Commissioners of the Pharmacy Technician Accreditation Commission (PTAC). In 2009 it was recommended by the Task Force on Pharmacy Technician Education and Training Programs that the “NABP should encourage ACPE and ASHP to work collaboratively to develop an accreditation system for pharmacy technician education and training programs that reflects all pharmacy practice settings and, if feasible, to consolidate the activities into one accrediting body.” Therefore, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)  worked together to create the PTAC. The Appointed Commissioners, along with a press release are available in the link below.

Brian Caswell, longtime member of the Kansas Pharmacists Association and immediate past chairman of the KPhA Government Affairs Committee announced his candidacy for representative from Kansas Legislative District 1. District 1 is in Southeast Kansas and includes the cities of Chetopa in Labette County along with Baxter Springs, Riverton, Galena and Columbus in Cherokee County.

When asked what motivated Caswell to seek the House seat he stated that there are three primary reasons that he is running. First, people in the district need access to affordable healthcare. Second, he is a big supporter of education and feels this area needs a lot of work. Finally, he deeply feels that Southeast Kansas needs to create jobs. When discussing these issues it is easy to see that he is genuinely passionate about each one of them and that he understands how interconnected each area is with the other.

    Cooperation to Get Things Done

In addition to his strong advocacy of the pharmacy profession, Caswell is a lifelong resident of the area and knows it intimately. He has served as a member of the Project 17 Leadership Initiative, which is a wide-ranging effort that aims to use regional cooperation to improve the economy and quality of life in an area bordered by Miami and Franklin counties on the North, Greenwood and Chautauqua counties on the West, and Cherokee County in the Southeast.

Caswell has seen through his involvement in Project 17 and his daily interaction with his patients the challenges facing Southeast Kansas. "Like any region in Kansas, we have our challenges. But it is my firm belief that our strengths far outweigh our challenges," said Caswell.

KPhA applauds Caswell's willingness to serve Kansans as a strong voice for his district.

The National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) task groups are seeking volunteers to participate. Task group participation is open to NCPDP members and non-members alike.  This is your opportunity to have a real voice in the important process of transforming healthcare. Task groups meet via conference calls.

Below are some of the newer task groups or areas that need expertise.

MC Real Time Benefit Check Analysis Task Group scope is to:

    • Recruit a wide range of implementer and standards subject matter experts to participate in providing input and guidance to the task group.
    • Focus the work of the task group solely on defining the Use Cases and Business Requirements of a real-time benefit check (RTBC) solution.
    • Do not base these discussions on any of the existing standards so as not to be limited by current implementations and to remain objective in the work effort.
    • The deliverable of the task group will be documentation of the Use Cases and Business Requirements for RTBC.
    • The task group's scope is not to select a standards base or define a solution, although these documents will help guide NCPDP in a future discussion and direction on recommending a solution and standard.

Contact Teresa Strickland at tstrickland@ncpdp.org to join.

WG45 CAQH CORE Task Group will provide NCPDP representatives with information and pharmacy directive on CORE initiatives. Contact Teresa Strickland at tstrickland@ncpdp.org to join.

WG7 Specialty Pharmacy Data Exchange Sub-Task Group will standardize data sets exchange (utilization/clinical) between specialty pharmacy and manufacturers to support programs and agreements between the parties incorporating clinical data that may be associated with specific disease states. Contact Kittye Krempin at kkrempin@ncpdp.org to join.
